David Simmons is the State Senator for District 22, serving Orange and Seminole Counties. He took office on November 3, 2010, and was sworn in as our new State Senator on November 16, 2010.

David is chair of the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Education Pre-K – 12 Appropriations. He is a member of the Committees on Budget, Agriculture, Budget Subcommittee on Higher Education Appropriations, Judiciary, and Rules Subcommittee on Ethics and Elections. He is also a Republican Majority Whip.

During the 2011 Legislative Session, David sponsored several important pieces of legislation. These included improving the business market for spaceflight tourism companies; providing a reasonable and flexible implementation of the class size amendment; giving a property tax break to active military members deployed abroad; de-regulating telephone service to provide more competition and benefit both consumers and businesses; and solidifying and protecting private property rights.

David was a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 through 2008. From his experience in the House, David gained expertise in a broad spectrum of issues that are important in our State. The Orlando Sentinel consistently rated David Simmons as one of the most effective Legislators in Central Florida. In 2007, speaking about David’s accomplishments, The Sentinel said that David Simmons is “the definition of substance over style.” In 2008, The Sentinel said David was the House’s problem solver. Just recently, the Sentinel rated David as a leader in the Senate.

David was responsible for obtaining the funding for the University of Central Florida’s highly acclaimed Interactive Entertainment Academy; obtaining significant funding for Seminole Community College, including its new Altamonte Springs campus; being a major force behind the legislation that saved nursing homes for our senior citizens during the 2001 nursing home crisis; sponsoring the landmark Florida constitutional amendment that passed requiring 60% approval by voters of any amendment to our constitution; and rewriting Florida law so as to permit citizens to stand their ground in self defense of themselves and their family members, which became model legislation used throughout the United States and the world. With persistence and dedication David worked tirelessly to change the education funding formula to bring an additional $100 million to Central Florida schools.

The Florida Sheriffs’ Association, the Florida Medical Association, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and the Florida Restaurant Association have awarded David Legislator of the Year Awards. He received the Faith and Family Award from the Christian Coalition of Florida. Recently, Association Industries of Florida named David as a Champion of Business.

David was born in Nashville, Tennessee. He graduated first in his class in Mathematics from Tennessee Technological University in 1974. He earned his Juris Doctorate from Vanderbilt Law School, one of the nation’s premier law schools, where he has served on its National Council.

David is the financial managing partner of de Beaubien, Knight, Simmons, Mantzaris & Neal, LLP, one of the largest law firms in Central Florida with over 50 attorneys. He is board certified by The Florida Bar both in Business Litigation and Civil Trial. He is also board certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He holds the highest ranking an individual attorney can receive (AV) as designated by Martindale-Hubbell Directory. He is known as one of Central Florida’s premier commercial litigation attorneys.

David has lived in Florida since 1977 and has a long history of public service in Florida. Most importantly, he is the father of two beautiful girls, Krysia (16) and Alicya (13), who are the love of his life. He and his family attend Annunciation Catholic Church.

Special guest speaker U.S. Representative (FL-24) Sandy Adams:
Currently in her first term serving parts of Orange, Brevard, Seminole and Volusia counties, Congresswoman Adams brings concrete legislative experience, a no-nonsense attitude and a commitment to bringing fiscally responsible solutions to Washington, D.C.

Sandy has spent her entire career working to serve others. Whether as a member of the U.S. Air Force, an Orange County Deputy Sheriff for 17 years, as a State Representative (2003-2011), or today as a Member of Congress, she knows what it takes to give back to her community. Strong, principled, and hard-working, she has a record of accomplishment that combines her no-nonsense attitude with an understanding of Central Florida’s values and priorities.

Sandy defeated the Democratic incumbent in 2010 by a 60%-40% margin – the second largest victory over an incumbent of any Republican in 2010 – and announced her candidacy in January for the new Florida District #7.

Special guest speaker U.S. Representative (FL-8) Daniel Webster:

A family man and small-business owner, he has dedicated himself to serving the citizens of Central Florida with honor and integrity. For nearly three decades, he has fought on behalf of Florida’s hardworking taxpayers and families to advance common-sense reforms and principled policy.

Webster served as the Speaker of the Florida House and Majority Leader in the Senate, working in these leadership roles to shake up the status quo in Florida and pass sweeping reforms that earned him widespread praise from the people of Florida.

Currently, Webster is working in Congress on transportation issues to create jobs, improve Florida’s roads and highways, and find ways to save money by eliminating fraud and abuse.

Webster’s other committee assignment in Congress is on the influential House Rules Committee where he is fighting to bring more transparency to the process and advance a policy environment based on principle, not power.

Doors open at 6:00 with drinks served

We will be meeting this Tuesday (12/13) , 630pm at Gray Robinson (301 E. Pine St, 14th floor, Orlando, FL). Doors open at 6pm though. Parking is available in the garage across the street, just bring your ticket upstairs for validation. We have a fun and holiday themed meeting planned and I hope that you will be able to make it.

FIRST: We are excited to announce that the Chairman of the Orange County GOP, Lew Oliver, has agreed to come and speak to us! Lew is a terrific speaker who I believe will share his often prescient thoughts on the presidential race as well as ways we can make the difference that is needed in 2012.

SECOND: We ask you to bring toys to our meeting! As is our tradition during the Christmas season, we gather up as many toys as we can and give them to Toys for Tots. It’s not mandatory of course, but you should see the pile get going between 6 and 630pm.

THIRD: We will be bringing some Publix platters, including some of their fried chicken which is a favorite of the club’s, so that people will be able to enjoy both our customary drinks as well as food for this December meeting. So come to the meeting and bring a conservative friend– we have good reason to celebrate the cause.

FOURTH: We will be taking nominations for the 2012-13 OCYR officers: President, Vice President, Associate Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. If you have been a member since the July meeting, then you are eligible to run. We encourage any interested members to run and get involved. This will be a huge year for the club, and planning on our renowned election-year Hobnob has already begun. I have decided to not run for re-election, if that helps your decision for at least one position, LOL. Nominations will ONLY TAKE PLACE in December. Elections occur in January.

The next couple months are going to be very, very busy. We’re going to have debate watching parties, Margaret Thatcher socials, debates, and presidential primary activism. It is never too late to get involved or to bring others to the cause. If you have any suggestions, or want to get involved in any campaign (we currently have requests from Romney, Gingrich, and Mayor Ken Bradley for volunteers), then let me know.

THE ORANGE COUNTY YOUNG REPUBLICANS

INVITE YOU

To Attend A Special Movie Screening Of

WAITING FOR SUPERMAN

We will be showing the award-winning documentary WAITING FOR SUPERMAN (watch the trailer) on November 1st, 2011 at the Orlando Science Center’s large Darden Theater (seats 248). For those who do not know, the movie shows our decaying education system through some very real people, and explains why we should despair. It then shows us hope, and how we just might be able to turn this around and give every child the opportunity to change their destiny.

We will begin the movie shortly after 6:45pm, it should run until about 8:25, after which we will have an outstanding panel of speakers featuring the James Madison Institute’s Education Fellow William Mattox. This is a powerful movie that will resonate with anyone who is worried about the plight of those ostensibly receiving an education today in America and who wants to be a part of the discussion on how we can shift course toward giving children an opportunity to receive the education they need to not only survive, but climb their way up.

In summary:

WHO: Orange County Young Republicans and co-sponsor James Madison Institute
WHEN: Tuesday, November 1st, 2011
WHERE: The Orlando Science Center Darden Theater – 777 East Princeton Street, Orlando, FL
WHY: Because this is a discussion we need to have
RSVP: If you want to reserve your seat, please email me at ocyr.president@gmail.com with # of tickets. If you do not RSVP, seating is first come, first served. TICKETS ARE FREE.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to inquire. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you there.

Greetings!

On our list of “Most Sought Speakers,” this one ranks right at the top. We’re very proud to announce the following for our October meeting:

The Mayor of Orange County, Teresa Jacobs, a Republican, has agreed to speak to us. This marks her first return to the OCYRs since her triumphant election as Mayor. Mayor Jacobs had a massive reserve of supports from our club during all phases of her campaign and has grown even more popular through her common sense approach to the job after election. Please be there BEFORE 6:30pm because the Mayor will begin speaking promptly at that time.

Other items on the agenda:
